China, Cambodia Hold Strategic Defense Dialogue in Phnom Penh
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun co-hosted the session alongside their Cambodian counterparts, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Defense Minister Tea Seiha, a state news agency reported.
Talks ranged across bilateral relations, political and security cooperation, and the broader regional landscape. Both governments pledged to intensify law enforcement and defense collaboration, jointly combat telecom fraud and online gambling, and shore up cybersecurity frameworks.
The joint communiqué stressed resolving regional tensions through dialogue, "jointly opposing unilateral bullying and power politics, and upholding global free trade and international fairness and justice."
Beijing expressed readiness to deepen ties with Phnom Penh, champion a shared regional security model, and advance a "just and equitable" global governance architecture. Cambodia, for its part, reaffirmed its unwavering adherence to the one-China principle.
Both Chinese officials subsequently held separate talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, who pledged continued friendship with Beijing, called for expanded high-level cooperation in clean energy, welcomed Chinese investment, and vowed to "resolutely" dismantle online gambling and fraud networks operating across borders.
Wang pressed the importance of solidarity between the two countries amid what he characterized as a "tense and chaotic external environment," while urging a decisive push to "completely eradicate" cross-border cybercrime. He also called on both nations to act in concert on multilateral platforms in defense of "fairness and justice."
On the sensitive matter of the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute, Hun Manet expressed hope for an active Chinese role in facilitating peace, to which Wang responded that Beijing stands ready to build platforms that restore direct dialogue between the two neighboring states.
